With over 20 years experience in professional counseling, and as a graduate of the University of Houston specializing in working with individuals and couples, she is currently serving as private practitioner working with a broad spectrum of clients. Prior to January, 2013, Shirley served for 8 years as the Executive Director and a clinician at Interface-Samaritan Counseling Centers. She was affiliated wih Interface-Samaritan overall for 18 years, serving on the board of directors as well. She understands nonprofit organizational leadership and systems. Among her areas of expertise are couple/marriage issues, life issues for individuals, resolving issues related to trauma and abuse, helping people deal with grief and loss, and guiding people through any type of life change they are facing.

Shirley co-developed a premarital program for a local church 18 years ago, co-presented that program for 7 years, and has solely presented this program in full for the past 5 years at another large Houston church. She also has worked with many stepfamily issues, predominately with the couple.
Shirley is also certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). This is a method of psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma resulting in PTSD. EMDR also works successfully with many other disorders including, but not limited to, anxiety disorders, stress reduction, addictions, disturbing memories, sexual and/or physical abuse, phobias, and acute trauma (such as witnessing something very traumatic or being involved in an intensely frightening situation). She has done extensive additional training with master trainers such as Laurel Parnell, Craig Penner, and Ana Gomez.
Shirley is married, has one adult son, two biological grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, and three step-grandchildren. She is a long-time Houstonian.
